Classy Comments from my Autograph Book, circa 1950's

The talent of young teenagers.
Just been browsing through two old autograph books.   Such enlightening stuff I haven't read for ages!   Here are a few of them.

"A little brown bunny
was sitting on the dunny
waiting for his mummy
to come and wipe his bummy".

"She bent to pick a budding rose
a budding rose so tender.
She bent a little bit too far
and bang! went her suspender".

Roses are red, violets are blue,
Orchids are 25 bob*
will dandelions do?
* a "bob" was a shilling in the old currency -
 10 cents, so 25 bob was $2.50.

Did you know?
In Connecticut, USA, it is illegal to walk across the street on your hands.

From the internet.

Quote.
"We stopped for 10 minutes every 2 hours to stretch our legs.   I didn't stretch mine, as they seemed long enough".

Memories of long ago
Wow, how old is this?   If you're not sure, just check the price - 8 1/2 pence.   We (in Australia) changed to decimal currency in 1966.  This actually belonged to my mother, but I "inherited" it a few years ago.   Maybe I thought I'd like to crochet some d'oyleys.  Who knows, maybe I will one day.

More mangled English
In an Acapulco hotel:  The manager has personally passed all the water served here.

Detour sign in Japan:  Stop - Drive Sideways.

In a Greek tailor's shop:  Order your summers suit now.  Because it is a big rush, we will execute customers in strict rotation.

A Bit of Nonsense

Test for Mental Patients
During a visit to a mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what is the criteria that defines a patient to be institutionalised.
"Well", said the Director, "we fill a bathtub with water, then we offer the patient a teaspoon, a cup, and a bucket, and ask them to empty the bathtub".
"Oh, I understand," said the visitor.  "A normal person would choose the bucket as it is the largest."
"No," answered the Director.  "A normal person would pull the plug out."

Did You Know?
Donald Duck comics were once banned in Finland because Donald doesn't wear pants.

English?
English is a funny language, and when it is translated from a foreigner's point of view, it can be quite hilarious, as these signs show.
Outside a Hong Kong dress shop:  Ladies have fits upstairs.
In a Rome laundry:  Ladies, leave your clothes here and spend the afternoon having a good time.
On the door of a Moscow hotel room:   If this is your first visit to the USSR, you are welcome to it.
In a Tokyo bar:  Special cocktails for the ladies with nuts.
In the window of a Swedish furrier:  Fur coats made for ladies from their own skin.

The First Post

Culling and sharing
I've decided I have way too much "stuff", so I've been gradually cleaning it all out. I've found several folders of bits and pieces that, at the time I saw them, I thought were worth keeping; they aren't! So now I'm fobbing them off onto anyone who dares to read this blog.
There will be quotes; bits of irrelevant information - things you didn't know you needed to know; emails I've received over the years; and I'll even throw in some of my personal photos, some dating back to the year dot. Hopefully, you'll find some of the "stuff" worth a look, and the "nonsense" worth a chuckle or two.

Unbelievable
1.   Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas, was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers, after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running around inside a furniture store.  The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving little toddler was Ms. Robertson's son!

2.   19-year-old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbour ran over his hand with a Honda Accord.  Mr Truman apparently didn't notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbour's hubcaps!

3.   Jerry Williams of Little rock, Arkansas, was awarded $14,500 and medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by his next door neighbor's beagle.  The beagle was on a chain in its owner's fenced yard.  The award was less than sought because the jury felt the dog might have been just a little provoked at the time by Mr Williams, who had climbed over the fence into the yard, and was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet gun.

Today's Quote

Hieroglyph - for those who can't afford to buy a glyph.

Keep away from the Stock Exchange - it's too commercialised.

Who needs rhetorical questions?

Be more or less specific.

I've told you a million times not to exaggerate!

The wingspan of a Boeing 747 is longer than the Wright brothers' first flight.

Personal Photo

I spottted this van's number plate as I drove into the service station one day. I must have looked a dill, standing there taking a photo, but it was worth it.

Well that's my first entry. I'll probably change some things, and cringe a bit as I go along, but it's all good fun, and a learning experience. And if no-one reads my blog, at least I'll have digital record of all this "stuff" I'm throwing away.
